Sales Don't Make Themselves

I like many of you thought that all I had to do was to publish my books online and copies would start selling... Yeah, about that. Apparently that's not how this works. But, the good news is that this whole book marketing thing isn't rocket science. Normal people like you and me can do it if you're willing to put in the time and effort up front. Here are some of the things I have found that have helped my self-publishing venture pick up a little steam.

* Join an author group on Facebook

This has been my best decision so far! There are so many of us out there. Why not gather in one place (a socially distant place) and swap ideas, successes, and horror stories? I didn't have a clue what a hashtag even was or what it did until I connected with the wonderful people in these groups. Thanks to them (and some much needed dumbing down of tech terms) my Instagram following is growing as well as my Facebook following. Best news yet, the books are getting attention! (that was the goal after all) :)

*Take Advantage of Book Bloggers of all Kinds.

Amazon's rules for reviews can be pretty strict, but that's the way it should be! It keeps the playing field fair for all of us. There is this thing you can do with these bloggers called an Advanced Review Copy (ARC). This is where you send a copy to whatever book blog clicks with your genre for free in exchange for an honest review. I sent one for my first book, and she (politely) turned my book upside down.

The truth can be harsh to hear (after all that book can feel like your baby to you) but in the grand scheme of things, these editorial reviews can seriously improve your writing and spread your exposure.

*THROW A PARTY!!!!!

I know a lot of you probably think that I'm kidding, but I'm serious. Celebrate your accomplishment. It probably took you a long time to make that book everything you wanted it to be. Have some fun with it! Reach out to local news sources and friends. Create a Facebook event, make sure to have snacks, drinks, little party favors (like bookmarks) and of course, copies of your book on hand. Give a little speech, play some games, and let the good times roll! Everyone loves a party, and if they have a good time, they will most likely be looking for your next release so they can do it again.

*To Wrap it Up

I know it's called "Self-Publishing", but seriously you don't have to go it alone. Reach out to these groups, bloggers, beta readers, and friends. They are valuable sources of information and support. And even better yet, a never ending stream of new books to read! (Because let's face it, if you're here, you're probably a bookworm just like me!)

Happy Reading!
